Note: We have written often about the visual pollution – not to mention the inconvenience when they are in the middle of the sidewalk – caused by the large utility boxes that dot Memphis. Recently, we saw how St. Louis had allowed artists to paint scenes from the city’s history on some of the boxes there. Hopefully, MLGW will consider that the boxes can actually be used as canvases for artwork.

Utility boxes are usually pretty boring. But in the right hands, they can become canvases for sidewalk masterpieces.
With permission from New Zealand telecom company Chorus, Auckland artist Paul Walsh spent the last couple of months transforming five utility boxes into striking works of art. He plans to complete five to 10 more in January and February.
In recent years, spruced-up utility boxes have shown up all over the world – including in San Francisco, Taipei, and Vancouver. It sure seems like an easy-enough way to inject some personality into the neighborhood.
