About Smart City Memphis
Since 2005, this has been Smart City Consulting’s blog with the aim of connecting the dots and providing perspective on issues and policies shaping Memphis. Editor and primary author is Tom Jones, columnist at Memphis magazine, author of two books and a museum exhibition, and consultant on public policy and strategic planning. Smart City Memphis was called one of the most intriguing blogs in the U.S. by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change; The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal wrote: “Smart City Memphis provides some of the most well-thought-out thinking about Memphis’ past, present, and future you’ll find anywhere,” and the Memphis Flyer said: “This incredibly well-written blog sets out to solves the city’s ills – from the mayor to MATA – with out-of-the-box thinking, fresh approaches to old problems, and new ideas.” If you have questions, submissions, or ideas for posts, please email Tom Jones, at tjones@smartcityconsulting.com.
Beautifully said.
Nicely produced, inspirational video that strives to make humanists feel that their lives are meaningful without accepting a supernatural God of the universe. Judeo-Christian philosophy that humanity has dignity and purpose and relevance because we have been created by a loving and rational God “in his likeness” is simply altered to say that humans have meaning because they are part of the star stuff. Of course, with stirring background music and visuals, it’s much easier to ignore the narrator’s lack of explanation for how all those stars containing the perfect, complete blend of the building blocks of life came into existence. The humanist view, when stripped down to its essentials, holds that life is random and therefore purposeless. Good luck with feeling good about that by watching slick videos on YouTube.
Eve:
Why would you watch this and assume that it means the people who like it don’t believe in God? Wouldn’t it be just as easy to say only God could do something this incredibly inspiring and complex?
It seems that some people who think they are people of faith really have too little faith, because videos like this threaten their rigidity of belief.
We heard someone say once that us trying to explain God is like a dog trying to explain humanity. We try but we are limited by our own imagination and our own sense of grandeur and by words on a page in a Bible verse rather than the miracles all around us.
Amen. “Even the rocks cry out…” Well the rocks and molecules were crying out in this video! Good stuff 🙂
Just because life is random does not mean it must be lived without purpose.
