Since 2005, this has been Smart City Consulting’s blog with the aim of connecting the dots and providing perspective on issues and policies shaping Memphis. Editor and primary author is Tom Jones, columnist, author of two books, and consultant on public policy. Smart City Memphis was called one of the most intriguing blogs in the U.S. by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change; The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal wrote that “Smart City Memphis provides some of the most well-thought-out thinking about Memphis’ past, present, and future you’ll find anywhere,” and the Memphis Flyer said: “This incredibly well-written blog sets out to solves the city’s ills – from the mayor to MATA – with out-of-the-box thinking, fresh approaches to old problems, and new ideas. Anyone who ‘talks negatively about Memphis’, you’re going to PUNCH them ??
What about if they just say the truth ??
Your visceral reaction to divergent thought is one more reason why Memphis can’t seem to go forward, and why lots of people ‘talk negatively’ about Memphis.
I guess you’re going to offer up that silly southern admonishment of “if you can’t say something NICE, don’t say anything at all” ?
We all have legitimate opinons…get used to it.
Good grief, shekel, you must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed today based on your comments here and on melissa’s post. maybe you could look into a sense of humor and some optimism for 2011?
I’m with you Margot. The negativity and hate must stop. The people who perpetuate this negativity are either really unhappy people themselves or are wearing blinders and choosing to overlook the dozens of exciting, progressive things happening here across all fronts. It’s all in your outlook.
Why is it that people on this site seem to enjoy making PERSONAL ATTACKS ??
You want to challenge CONTENT, that’s fair, other wise you’re showing why Memphis is as narrow as it really is.
if you don’t know any better, you don’t know better
shalom
oh good grief, get over yourself.
Shekel: Why don’t you just keep your opinions to yourself? At least Margot McNeely is doing something. She saw a problem and faced it headon by fixing it. Unlike you.
Shekel: If you knew Margot you would have been laughing after reading the comment she made. She’s just humorously expressing the fatigue we all experience from an abundance of negativity we encounter through people that are down on the city. We’re doing our best to stay positive while painfully aware of the problems that plague Memphis.
Oh dear. Shekel, this is a privately operated blog and the opinions and posts expressed here can be taken- or misconstrued as you have somehow managed to accomplish- in whatever light the reader chooses. I have lived in this city for only 2 years and do not know Margot personally. Even without this personal knowledge I found it reasonable to assume that her suggestion was made with comedic relief in mind and quite funny to boot.
You certainly are easily offended.
you’d think a guy who decides to name himself “the Shekel” would have a sense of humor.
you , Anonymous, have a great screen name as well
but you can call be Rabbi if that makes you laugh
Seeing as they built the greenline and they have in fact come in numbers greater than anyone predicted I can only assume your are simply not well versed in current community events and developments.
Wow, seriously shekel…. come on. Have a drink or something.
Thanks, Margot, for sharing your New Year’s resolution, but more importantly, thank you for the work you do every day to make our city greener and ore sustainable. While others talk, you’ve created an entire program from scratch that’s having impact and changing our culture. We admire you.
Give it up. Your opinion is just that, your opinion. On this issue, you are most assuredly wrong. Again, start your own blog and you can make the rules.
Hey Ahab, er, Shekel, that big white whale went thataway…..
Public discourse is definitely justified on any topic that concerns the city, but seeing as this is a privately operated blog, the moderator has the right to remove any comment they wish. The argument that receiving public monetary support obligates them to operate said page as a public message board only holds water if said financial support is provided specifically to manage and operate such a website. Otherwise, it remains private. There is nothing any of us can do to prevent SCM from simply refusing to operate this site any longer, thus they can manage it and its content as they see fit.
If this does not set well with any author, I am sure they are both free and able to operate and maintain their own blog.
