The Chicago Tribune reminds us what a special place we live in: Yes, the King is there, but explore the rest of historic Memphis.
It begins this way:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For a lot of people, getting a dose of history while on vacation can rank right up (or down) there with getting a dose of turista. And you go to Memphis for barbecue, music, Elvis and Graceland, right?
History? We don’t need no steenkin’ history.
But then pretty much everywhere you go here, history smacks you in the face. And, it turns out, that’s not a bad thing, because there are some masterful storytellers who, as that trite old saying goes, bring history alive.
